FOR SAILORS' DEPENDANTS.
-The Prime' Minister read in the House of Representatives;yesterday the following letter from. the managing director.,of Sargood, Son, and Ewen, Ltd.: ~ "Mv company has viewed -with sabsfaction the inauguration of a fund.by Mr. M'Hardv, in his usual generous manner, for thc'rolief of widows and orphans of the sailors of the British- havy. }7e desire to' donate <£1000 to this -fund, and as no doubt all the centres will bo opening similar funds, I havepleasure in enclosing our cheque for the 'wlapp ß . being donated locally in Auckland, Clujatchurch, and Dii.nedin.' ■ irr. The' Canterbury Park Trotting Club to-day voted .£250 to the British Sailors' Dependants' Fund, and .£25 to the Minesweepers'' Fund. ' . „ The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce voted .£SO to the British Sailors' Dependants' Belief Fund, and passed a motion recommending the Government to place on the Estimates for the coming year a sum of not less than .£IOO,OOO, to .bo used for the benefit of wounded soldiers •and dependants of those fallen in the naval engagements up to the present and to the end of the war. - The Lyttelton Sailors' Society to-day cabled ITome .£SOO to . assist needy cases among the mine-sweepers as a result-of the naval battle. , •
