"SAILORS' DAY"
FOE THE WIDOWS AND CHILDREN 01'' THJi DEAD HEROES. The Wellington Patriotic Society hag decided to mute a big effort tu raise funds 111 Wellington fur the relief of the widows-and children of the wen of .{ho 'North Sea Fleet who lost their lives in the historical Battle of Jutland. So far the number of men who perished nobly iu tho great sea. fight is.not accurately known. Suilicient t.o say they were many, and it may be taken for granted that a large proportion of tliora have loft their dependants none too well off, so that the appeal to be made lias a foundation of absolute need, which few right-thinking people will be able to resist. . \ The society lias decided to spread its appeal over three days—Thursday; Friday, and Saturday next, and has already received assurance from numerous young ladies that they will do all in their 'power .! to assist. Further details respecting the arrangements will lie announced in- Monday's Dominion. The committee has decided, however, that each, day's collection, will be at once cabled to England, so that there will be no delay in assisting those who may l>o in need. NAVY LEAGUE'S APPEAL (To tho Editor.) Sir,—We wish to bring under the no. tice of vour readers the urgent need of prompt assistance for the widows, .orphans, and other dependants of those who so gallantly and unhesitatingly sacrificed their lives cn. our behalf in the naval battle off Jutland. ■ After patiently waiting and watchinging in all weathers for - nearly , two years; Jellicoe and his men met the mighty German High Seas Fleet in full force, and again demonstrated the Navy's watchword "Deeds not Words."
By generous self-sacrifice, dogged determination, nnd courage they nobly maintained British naval supremacy, and prevented the domination of Europe by ah aggressive and ambitious Power ready to trample on the rights and freedom of the smaller nations. It is Hardly necessary to draw attention to the dire results that would liavo followed a German victory at sea. Even the temporary escape of her raiding cruisers into the Atlantic would have seriously endangered this Dominions' oversea trade. We must all realise collectively and Individually our huge obligations to tho Navy, and it should be a privilege to help the 'dependants of the naval heroes who have voluntarily given their lives for us. Donations are urgently required,. and these will be acknowledged in -the public Press. At short intervals the amount subscribed will be cabled to the League's Emergency Committee in London, a largo and influential body presided _ over by I.ord Charles Beresford and in direct touch with the Admiralty. ■ On behalf of the Wellington Branch of the Navy League,—We are, etc., (Sgd.) JOHN P. LUKE, President, (Sgd.) J. B. HABCOTTRT, . Chairman of Executivo. (Sgd.) ROBERT DARROCH, Hon. Treasurer, (Sgd.) CECIL W. PALMER, Hon. Secretary, P.O. Box 625, Wellington. ' (Note.—Subscriptions received by Tm Dominion will lie duly acknowledged.) WOMENS' MEETING. Ladies who are prepared to offer their services in; any capacity towards assuring tho success of tho appeal for funds to alleviate the distress now being suffered by the dependants of our sailors who fell in tlio recent naval engagement in the North Sea are invited to meet at Messrs. Bethune and Co.'s auction rooms, Brandon Street, on -Monday afternoon, at 3 o'clock, and discuss arrangements in connection with tho appeal.
