He craves for a. placo where in his - leisure hours ho can enjoy good fellowship, amusement, and recreation, until he is disposed to resumo peaceful toil. Tluinlcs to tho far-sighted generosity of the farmers of Rangitikoi, Manawatu, Kairanga, and Horowhenua, a club or hostel free to all soldiers and sailors will soon matorialiso at Palmerston North. Headed by Mr. I'. A. M'Hardy, who is widely known for his numerous contributions to patriotic objects, many farmers in these districts have joined together to organise a great art union for tho purpose of erecting and endowing a Soldiers and Sailors' Hostel on tho M'Hardy gift section. The situation of tho proposed hostel is an excellent one. Palmerston is practically the centre of tho North Island, so that soldiers and sailors from the AVairarapa, Hawko's Bay, Taranaki, and other districts can, when passing: through Pahnereton, always have at this hostel comfortable reading and writing rooms—a cheery yarn about old times, or a game of billiards to while away an hour. And this club or hostel will bo free for all time— a permanent and useful monument to tho heroism of our lads in khaki and our boys in blue. . Tickets for this art .union, in . which tho total value of tho prizes amounts tx> JC2200, arc tow on sale. They cost but the modest sum of ono shilling, «nd every ticket gives the holder 250 chances. Tho first prize will bo 1000 good sheep. An .advertisement giving fuller particulars of the Anzac Art Union appears in this issue.. It also • contains a coupon, which should be filled up and forwarded with remittance to tho secretary of Iho committee at Palmerston North. lho dato of drawing has yet to be announced.
