Some dozen revolvers wero confiscated, several rifles, and two sugar-bags full of cartridges. It is a foregone conclusion that neither the British nor French Army authorities are sending recovered enteric cases back ■to the trenches. There were no ox-en-terics among the Atlicnic's draft yesterday, and those on board aro of opinion that all New Zealand cases will be returned to theso shores 01; else given some employment in England, where tliey can be under continual observation. Reference to the high rents now being :hargod for houses m the vicinity of training camps, and especially in the neighbourhood of Featherstou, was made in tne House of Representatives yesterday. Mr. Wilford said lie had been asked to bring under the notice of the Minister of Defcnce the charges made by one Thomas M'lvor to people who wished to erect tents on his property or to rent cottages from him. He had a photograph, which he produced, of a littje unlined cottage, "just a shack" as he said, unlined, without any cooking appliances, for which 12s. 6d. a week was being charged. It was not worth 3s. a week. M'lvor was also charging 3s. a week for space in tho manuka on his land on which anybody wanted to erect a tent. Owing to the shortage of houses near t'eatherston it was possible to exact rents of X 2 2s. or J:2 10s. a week for houses not worth 10s. a week. He (Mr. Wilford) suggested that the Minister should take steps to stop, these exactions, ill-. Allen said he would be very pleased to make inquiries into tho matter. If the cottages were on Defence ground the Defence Department could control the charges for them just as it had controlled the charges for motor-cars. If the houses were on M'lvor's oivu land, then the question of regulating rents was rather one for the Government than for the Defence Department. Two questions by Mr. Payne, although he proposed to give - notice of \ them, brought very prompt replies in the House of Representatives yesterday. He asked the Minister of Defence whether it was a fact that 32 Germans were brought back in tho Willochra as undesirable;). "Sir," said the Defenee Minister, rising on the instant, "l don't know where the honourable member gets this sort of wild information, but I wish to say at once that there is not a particle of truth in it." Mr. Payne's other question had relation to Mr. F. If. B. Fisher. He ga\'e ttotico to ask whether Mr. Fisher was employed in the High Commissioner's office, and if so, what were his duties, and what was his salary. Mr. Massey: I may say he is not.
