THE SCOW SOUTHERN ISLES
WRECKED AT FAREWELL SPIT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Nelson, June 5. The vessel.wrecked at Farewell Spit has been definitely identified as the scow • Southern Isles, owned by Messrs. Tasker and Leviea and tho master and the engineer, all of. Nelson. She carried a crew of five, consisting of: C. Gibson (master), Nelson; A. Foster (engineer),'Picton; C. Montieth, A.8., Blenheim; J. Clifton, A.8., was also on board, and the cook, whoso name is unknown. A party from Nelson reached the wreck' yesterday, and searched for the crew, of whom no trace was'found. The tug Janie Seddon leaves to-night to assist in the search. ■ The Southern Isles left North Cape for Picton on Sunday week, laden with coal, and it is believed met with bad weather early in the week.
The Marine Department received word last evening from the liglitkeeper at Farewell Spit that a party boarded the vessel on Sunday, and found no bodies. The search continued all day by the police, the keeper, and a party of civilians. A rough sea was running yesterday. , Later, the Collector of Customs at Nelson reported that the search party located the wreck of the Southern Isles on Farewell Spit, five miles from the lighthouse, bearing south-east by east, halfeast. There was no sign of ■ the. crew. The search steamer Janie Seddon arrived at Nelson at 3 p.m. yesterday, and as •soon as she replenished her bunkers the search for tho missing crew would be continued.
