After-several fruitless assaults tho onemy penetrated-our first line between Fort Douaumont and Lake Vaur. Everywhere else tho German attacks were broken by our machine-gun fire, which caused heavy losses. ' "On Thursday a German aeroplane dropped several iiombs on the open town of Bar-le-Duc; eighteen civilians were killed and twenty-five wounded."
