Very heavy fighting continues on the plateau of Sette Commeui, where the Austrian pressure is strongest. The Italians have evacuated Asiago, holding the hills to the east. The Austrians are sloivly advancing in the mountainous country north of the town. The Italian wings are holding and punishing tho Austrians very severelj;. •' The Italians' admirable motor transport system saved t'ho situation in Italy, enabling great reinforcements to reach Arsiero and the Asiago plateau in time to stop the gap due to the breaking of the first line. The most serious loss is that of the big guns, which were abandoned on t'he Monte Maggio-Spitz-Lonezza line. AUSTRIANS RECKONED WITHOUT THEIR HOSTS. . (Roc. May 31, 11.20 p.m.) Now York, May 31. A message from Milan states: A Swiss officer who has returned from the Trentino says that the Austrian losses during the twelve days' offensive averaged - five thousand a day. Other reports from Berne state that 69,000 Austrians were fighting on the left wing, and after seven days more than half of these had been destroyed. Although the enemy was prepared at all points for a sensational march to victory, they found the evacuated territory denuded even of green stuffs. Calculating that the Italians would retreat precipitately, the enemy expected to find ample stores in the captured territory, but the field telephones got busy, with the result that the invading arjay was without food for twenty-four hours.
