, AN AMERICAN RAILWAY KING. By TelesraDli— Pross Association—Copyright St. Paul (Minn.), May 20. Obituary.—James J. Hill, the Anieritan Itaijway King. [James Jerome Hill was born in Ontario in 1838. Ho first worked in a steamboat office, then became agent for a transport company, and finally established a fuel and transport business of his own. He established, in 1870, tho'Red River Transportation Co., which was the first <to open communication, between St. Paul, Minnesota, • and Winnipeg. Ho secured control, and reorganised the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, and became its, ■ president, uutil it became part of the Great Northern system. He interested himself in building tho Great Northern Hail way, extending from Luke Superior to Puget Sound, with northern and southern branches, and a direct steamship connection with China and Japan. Latterly he -was president, and a director of a number of railway companies and' banking institutions.
