laeutz-Col. J. J. 1 Esson, who. was As-sistant-Quartermaster General to the N.Z. Expeditionary Force, arrived in Wellington yesterday morning, having reached Auckland from Vancouver by the NiaMr. A. Macintosh, superintendent in Now Zealand for Messrs. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., has intimated to his board of directors in London his intention to re. tire as soon as arrangements can be con. veniently made to relieve him. These, he expects, will bo effected at an early date. Mr. Macintosh has held tho position of uuperintendent for eight years past. Mr.. F. IC. Do Castro, who has for several years been chief dark of the Educa. iion Department, has been appointe dsccretary, vlen Sir Edward Gibbcfr, resigned. Ur Do Castro, who has been an officer of tho. Department ever since it was established in 187S, has an excellent record, and is generally considered one of the most urbane, tactful, and capable officers in the service. As he served four years in the Treasury before he joined the Education Department, he has been forty years in the Government service—and is still a young man.
