His Majesty the King, in a message to the people, 6ays: "To enable the country to organise more efficiently its military resources in the present great struggle for tho caUso of sivilisation, I, acting on the advice of my Ministers, deem it necessary to enrol ovory nble-bodied man between eighteen and forty-ono years of age, and desire to take this opportunity, of expressing n>y recognition and appreciation of tho splendid patri- , otism and self-sacrifice my people have displayed in raising by voluntary ' enlistment no fewer than 5,011,000/ the effort far surpassing that of. any nation under similar circumstances recorded in history, and ono which will be a Justing 6ource of pride to future g-enerations. I am confident tho mag. nificent spirit which lias hitherto 'sustained my people through the trials of this terrible war will inspire them to rodure the additional- sacrifice • now imposed upon them,, and which, with God's help, will lead us and our Allies . . to victory, which wc must achieve for tho liberation of Europe." But in any case it is a magnificent achievement.
