WANGANUI, MEETING BIG HURDLES GO TO BRAEBURN. MULLING-AR WINS CONNOLLY HANDICAP. By Telegraph—(Special Correspondent.) VVanganui, May 25. The weather was wet and cold for tho first day of the Wanganui races. There wa.-> a large attendance. ■ Tho totalisator handled i;2d,770, as against .£'25,050 on the first 'day last year. Miacara was the favourite in tho Borough Handicap. After a long delay at the barrier the_ start was.a-good one, with the exception of Geoige, who got left. Down the back Interlude and Tyson were showing clear of Astor, Miacara, and a bunched field. Entering -the straight, Interlude was out by herself, and Miacara fell back. Depredation camo fast inside the distance, and, cutting down the leader, won by two lengths. Master Achilles was'third, and. then came George and Astor, the last to finish be-, ing Prince Laddo and Lord Lupin. Tho Aucklander, Taih'ape, was'the best supported in the Hack Steeples, but he was never prominent, and was beaten into fourth place. ' Immensity took charge at tho first fence, and from this point was never troubled, and won in a canter by any distance, which could have been increased. She jumped a few fences wildly, but tlie majority well, and will improve considerably at her next outing. Paremata gave a fair showing, and was well dear of AVita at the finish. Then came laihape, Captain Dick, and Precious Metal, who were the only others to finish. ■The double stopped Silver Monarch and I'lingot. Foul Lupin fell at the top of the course. Considering the state of tho going and the. way the mare won, the time was exceptionally fast. Nita was withdrawal from tho big Steeplecliase. Naupata, who stripped well, was favourite, but several-of tlie others also came in for strong support. At the start Captain Mackay, Sew York, and Hurakia were prominent from the favourite, For a mile the field kept well together, and jumped splendidly. With half the distance gone the field was still closely bunched, and it was anybody's race. Passing the stand the second time Daylight Bill came down at the double, and upset Naupata and Hurakia. Brae- 1 burn was in charge at the top of tho straight, and going on well he had tho race won down the back, where a rank outsider, in Otupai, was his nearest at- . tendant. Bracbu.m gave a good exhibition of jumping, and taking the Inst fence safely he won by four lengths from Captain Mackay, with New ■ York third. Then at intervals came Master Strowan, ! Otupai, Jackinan, Glenmore, Naupata, | and Becline. Daylight Bill was going ■well when he fell, and so were Naupata and Hurukia, .but -Naupata had been trying "to got off, and had to.be kept on tho outside of the field. New York ran a good race, bu,t Bercola and • Glenmore are things of. tho past. The winner is owned by V. Golello, who trained Corozon when, lie won tho'' same race. He picked up? the Sir Laddo geldiijg for 100 guineas, and has persevered with -him \for a long .time, and now looks like owning ono of the most promising 'chasers in the Dominion. • . '

After Crown Pearl had been withdrawn', Austin and Bodenham were the best sunported for the Hack Hurdles, but the weight tbld on tho formar, and the distance found out tho latter. Marylqnd, and Bodenham wero out in front for six 1 furlongs, when Bodenham went.on, but at the end of another furlong Pursefiller, who. had given the field a big start, ranged up alongside the big Napier gelding. Tho pair jumped the fence at-.the halfmile together, but. Purseliller -had too much pace on the flat, _ and from this point onwards was. an. easy winner. Patronymic andi-Lord ,Nelson finished' on well and got the place money. Then came 'Mescal, .Maryland,. Austin, Bouenliain; and Captain Miro in tliat order. Pursefiller gave a splendid display;-and 611 that. form, must have more thaii u fighting chance in ■ the Great Northern Hurdles, ~ ' ' . ~ ' All started in.tho Century Erardles. Art pnil' TaTarn Jack were always the favourites, but heavy, support • came for Waipunoa towards the -close of the betting. At tjie start Waipumoa and blaster 1 Itegal went out iu front, but the former was steadied, and Master Kegal took up the running from Queen's Post, Marton, andStyTax'., With tho favourites well back passing the stand the second time, Tararu Jack had run into' second place, and going past the six furlongs post'Vkdian, ,Styr'a.\",. and. Waipunoa were most promin-. eilt of the others. • At the-bend the two Aiicklanders wero out by themselves,'and Master Regal easily defeated his. companion by . three lengths, .with S'tyrax iii' third place. Then came yiadian. Sir Donald and Darby Paul were in : tho rear the whole way.'.-Art failed badly, but may do a lot better with a race in him and on better going. Marton gave-a bettor exhibition, and is coming on, while Styrac surprised everybody by his for-, ward showing. Orinesby fenced badly, but he was prominent for a mile, and a hack hurdle race should not .be beyond him. Flynn, rider of the winner, very -nearly weighed in without some.Vof his gear, but the mistake was noticed in time. Thirteen - acceptors' all started in the ! Connolly Handicap, which went to the Ancklander, Mnllingar, after a very fine' race. At the, start; Zola, Multiply, Eewi, Poto, and Lady Louisa were the - most prominenty Down the baqlc Zola.led Soldier and Eewi Poto, with iWirita and Eiriperador .whipping,tliafield. Jtotind the home bend-Square Deal lrtoved up, and led into the straight, where Soldier got through on the fence. Over the last fifty yards Mullingar came with a r'usli, and beat Lady Louisa by a' neck ..Square Deal was a head away, and then , came Soldier. ' 1

/■Another big field was sent c/ut' in the' concluding event. Pbmeroy, who had been galloping well on -tho tracks, • was favourite, while Cello had solid support. The Fordell mare won, after a good race, with Maid o' Gowrie'and Spain in ' tho places. - Tickino and Pomeroy were tliemwt prominent of the.others.. THE RESULTS; BOROUGH HANDICAP..
