NOTES AND COMMENTS
. [By Glencoe-1 _The winter meeting of'the Wanganui Jockey- Ciub will be opened to-day, and racing will commence with the Borough Handicap, six furlongs, for which there are 13 acceptors. The rain which fell yesterday will not affect the going unless more falls to-day. lliacai'a, who always races well on this track, may bo one of the fancies. Of the light- weights, George may bo hardest to beat. * ■ In the Hack Steeples -Nita and Taihapo are both' certain of strong support, 'i'ho pair are good jumpers, and the latter is in tearaway order, but may tire' at the end. Immonsity, who will strip very well, gave a very pleasing exhibition yesterday, and as she is a winner at tho Winter Hurdles in Wellington she looks a class above the others. The Hastings mare will be ridden by G. Jones, who is'to make his roappearance over fences after a long spell at training jumpers. The following are the probablo starters and their riders in the big Steeplochase Jackman (A. Ward), list. 71b. Daylight Bill (W. Scobie), list. Gib. Glenmore (K. Edwards), list. Sib. Bercola (L. Traill), list. lib. Naupata (H. M'Sweeney), lOst. 121b. Haurakia (J. O'Conncll), lOst. 81b. Master Strowan (W. Ferris), lOst. Braeburn (J. Doerey), lOst. Captain Maekay (F. Flynn), 9st. 101b. New York (M'Donald), i)st. 101b. Otupai (Lawrence), 9st. 71b. Bceline, 9st. 71b. Naupata may be favourite, as ho is more forward than the others. »ud is
eenernlly a good jumper. Braeburn will do making his first appearance, but he is a good, safe jumper, and stays well. Ho has had a couplo of raccs over hurdles, and Trill have the services of J. Deerey, who specialises in taking the shortest route—a big consideration in a steeplechaso.
Of. the Hack Hurdles fielfl, Crown Pearl looks to be in n class by himself, but Oxenham may bo given a chance.
In the Century Hurdles Art (D. Sri Cay) will strip as well as anything. in tho race. Tararu Jack, who will bo ridden by his trainer (A. Julian), will bo in big demand. Vladian, who beat Harbour Light in the Jumpers' Flat at Trcntha'm (tho last-named then won a Hack Welter Handicap at Awapuni) may bo the' best of tho light-weights, ifor he is a good jumper and a great stayer.
The Conn&lly Handicap is supposed to be open. Zola has gone out of favour as a result of tho rain. R. Iteed has been substituted for A. Eeed, who cannot do the weight, and the latter will steer Multiply. Emperador will be ridden by L. Wilson. Lady Louisa i 3 partial to heavy going, and "may be the fancy.
The I'urua Hack Handicap, sight furlongs and a lialf/will be the best betting race of the day, and is, probably the most open. Spain (A. Oliver), Pomeroy (W. Bell), and Fionnula (R. Hatch) may be in the fighting-line at the finish.
