Tills I'UilfiO SERVICE. A question was asked in the llouso by Slr. Hidey as lo the 'advisability of retaining in the Public Service men who, though they liavo had forty years' service, are still fit to go on at their work in order that young men may be released for active service. /Jlit' Itlght lli'h. IV. P. JUsaey (Mm* Minister) has replied ns follows: No provision exists- requiriJij; an officer upon completing forty years' service to retire from the Public Service, but any olfiri-r may, if he so desires, retire after completing this period of service upon maleing an application to do so. In the case of officer* nlio riwdied IJie ago of sixty-five years (whether they have completed forty years' service or not) tho practice has existed for many years of requiring micb officers to retire from the Public Service,, and it is considered desirablo to adhere to this principle. In special cases where the services of an offi cer may be required by a Department as a result of other members of the stafl undertaking military service, the Public. Service Commissioner will give special coimidcrutioii to tho retention of the services of any such officer. ' The retirement of an officer of sixty-five years of age does not necessarily mean that tho position vacated by him will be filled by an officer oligible for military service. In most eases the numerical''vacancy caused b.* thi> ftiiieirent of each an nfficev is filled by a person who would not be so eligible,
