BOMBING EXCURSIONS IN THE WEST GREAT ARTILLERY ACTIVITY ON VERDUN FRONT The High" Commissioner reports:— „T , T r,-„ „ 1 . London, May 17, 3.10 p.m. In tho Argonne, at La Fille Jlorte, there is mine fighting to our advantage. "On the left bank of the Metisc the enemy bombarded our first line. An°at> tempt by the enemy to progress with grenades at Mort Homme was completely checked. ' "On the right bank of the Meuse there is great artillery activity on both sides between Haudromont Wood and Lake Vaux. North-west of Thiaumont Farm a grenade attack on one of our listening posts was successfully repulsed. "There hafre been artillery duels at several points, notably in Champagne and in the region of Butte dea Jlesnil. "On Tuesday night thirtben of our bombing aeroplanes threw 24 shells on the enemy's bivouacs in the Damvillers-Chaumont region; 11 fell on the stations at Brieulles and Clery; H on the cantonments at Matillois and Romagne; and 21 on Apremont station and Grar.dpre. Several Sres were seen as the result. "A French pilot brought down a German aeroplane north of Vic-sur-Aisne, both wings of tho enemy's machine becoming detached during tl.e fall. "Another French squadron dropped 40 shells on tho hangars at Frescatv; 20 on stations nt Metz and Aurs; 40 on Arnaville station, and 80 on the raiiway 'line and stations between Metz 'and Thioaville." AIR AND LAND ACTIVITY ON THE BRITISH FRONT TRENCH RAID BY THE SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS. The High Commissioner reports-.— > _ London, May 17, 5 p.m. A British official report states: "On Wednesday there were a considerable number of artillery, trench, and mortar actions. On Tuesday night two parties of Seaforth' Highlanders entered the Gernian trenches north of Roclincourt, and bombed three dug-outs fall of German?. Our casualties were slight. "Fighting continues among the craters we blew up on the Yirny Ridge on May 15. "On Tuesday there were 28 air combats. Two Albatrosses were brought down at Lillo_ and Vitry, and a third overturned. One of our scout aeroplanes and one reconnaissance machine are missing." FRENCH OFFICIAL. COMMUNIQUE. (Rec.
