An Italian official communique states: "The enemy in the Lagarina Valley launched five violent attacks upon the slopes ' north of Zugna Orta, but were driven back with enormous losses. The Adige River carried nivay numerous corpses." "A violent concentrated fire by guns of every calibre between the Terragnola Valley and Appei'astico resulted in our again straightening our front, abandoning some of our advanced positions. . "The enemy on Monday night repeatedly attempted to attack the Asiago sector, but was repulsed with the heaviest losses. "A vigorous attack in tho Val Sugana was similarly repulsed." AUSTRIAN OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUE. (Rec. May 18, 8.45 p.m.) Amsterdam, May 18. An Austrian .communique states: "Further positions have he£n captured, and the number of prisoners increased to 141 officers, 6100 men, and thirty guns." AUSTRIAN AIR RAIDS ON OPEN CITIES. (Rec. May 18, 8.45 p.m.) London, May 18. The "Daily Telegraph's" correspondent at Milan states that an Austrian offensive in the Trentino lias begun, with an attack by 300,000 troops, assisted by air raids on open cities. - V ' ATTEMPT TO BREAK THROUGH/IO VENETIAN PLAIN. (Rec. May 18, 9.55 p.m.) Milan, May '18. The fighting in the Trentino is confined to fifteen miles of front, but Italian, military critics agree that the object of tho Austrians is to attempt to force a way through to the Venetian Plain from tho salient of Settecomeni. Tho Italian advanced-posts wero onl ya few yards from Rovereto, and were incapable of serious resistance'. The new positions are still in Austrian territory, and are believed to be capable of resisting formidable onslaughts. Austrian aeroplanes on Tuesday bombed Venice and raided Mcstre at tho time the Italian Princesses were travelling to meet the Queen. The Italian aeroplanes, with star shells, drove off the raiders, who were following tho train. Tho populace accorded the Royal party an ovation on their escape.
