GALLIFOLI HEROES

ON THE SCROLL OF AVAR, By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright ("Times" and Sydney "Sim" Services.) (Rec. May 17, 5.5 p.m.) London, May IG. The "Daily Mail" says: "The men who fought through the tragic horrors of Gallipoli understand that they will get medals commemorating the heroism and suffering which all shared who landed on the peninsula. The Anzacs may not have to wait long."

Sir lan Hamilton,/ in a dispatch dated March 10, published in a supplement to tho ' "London Gazette," states that since the publication' of his December 11 Gallipoli dispatch "fresh light' has been .thrown on several episodes hitherto obscure," and that after sifting the evidence he is satisfied "that full justice has not been done to certain individuals and units." He therefore makes some corrections and additions, fresh tributes being paid to the bravery of'lrish troops in the peninsula. In the fighting at Chunuk Bair on August 9, 1915, it was the 6th Royal Irish Rifles, not the 10th Hampshircs, who with the 6th East Lancashire Regiment carried out an audacious bayonet charge up a slope. In addition to tho regiments* already mentioned in connection with the fighting at Chocolate Hill, tho sth Royal Irish' Fusiliers and the 7th Royal Dublin Fusiliers deserve special mention for tho enerxy and boldness of their attack. In tho attack on Hill 70 the Gtli Roval Trish Fusiliers and 6th Royal Dublin Fusiliers rendered distinguished service. The 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters and tho fjth Battalion Border Regiment disulayed.. vigorous initiative, combined with very steady discipline, during tho attack nn Ismail Oglu Tepe. The War Office also issues a list ot GO corrections of mistakes, of rank or name, which occurred amongst the names of the Australian officers and meii mentioned in tho last dispatoh. Among tho numerous corrections is the following concerning the New Zealand troops:— "In the description of the fight for' Lone Pine the praise given to tho 2nd New Zealand Battery under Major Svlces should have been given to the Ist New Zealand Battery under Major B'Gilp."
