The brief announcement yesterday that the Austrians were massing in\th« Trentino is followed up to-day by tie report of a big battle. Intense artillery fire, succeeded by massed waves of infantry attacks, enabled the Austrians to force the Italian line back to its main defences, but at heavy cost. '.. The great Eussian drive in Asia Minor is still progressing, the latest intelligence showing that the line on the southern flank is moving forward in the. direction of Mosul, on tho Tigris. The Austro-German staffs are. now thoroughly alarmed.at the progress of the Russians, whose ad- " vance has imperilled tho Turkish co mmunications, and large reinforcements of Austrians, Germans, and Bulgars ha,ve been dispatched. On . the Eussian European front the Germ ans have developed offensive activity at various points, with no appreciable results. Trench raids and artillery activity are the"main characteristics of the fighting on the Western front, and the Lancashire Fusiliers have been specially mentioned ior a noteworthy exploit on the Vmiy Heights. The critics are still disputing ~tlio Verdun puzzle, .and wondering what tho Germans are about to do. Two batches of : wounded Anzacs from tie Western front have arrived in london, the number aggregating about 450. .
