CHEAP FISH
» ' TROUT FROM LAKE ELLESMERE. The Hon. G. W. Russell, Minister of Internal Affairs, has prepared a scheme tor supplying Christcnurch with cheap fish. He has considered the question from the Dominion point of view, and will arrange to supply other centres as well. Explaining his proposals to representatives of .the Press on Friday, he said that steps would be taken to have a fish sta. tion, with smoking equipment, established at Lake Ellesmcre, aucl next season ha hoped to bo able to supply trout to the people of Cliristchurch and other Canterbury centres. The Department intended to smoke only its surplus fish, but many people preferred smoked fish to fresh fish. Asked as to cool storage, he said that tho freezing chamber of the meat companies could bo used. State fish now is used in many Government institutions and on the railway trains. The prospective markets, it is believed, are almost limitless. Next year, in addition to'Kotorua, Rotoiti, the Blue Lake and the Pink Lake wili bo fished. Inquiries will be made as to the possibilities in. the Otago lakes in order to supply fish to people in tho south. Mr. Russell has been informed that large supplies of trout can be obtained from the mouths of Canterbury rivers, and he will discuss with the Hon. Dr. M'Nab, Minister of Marine, a proposal to take trout from tho sea as well as from tho inland waters. Ho speaks very enthusiastically of his scheme, and says that he is determined to make it a success.
