Quinlivan, who has beon acting as a public' trainer, in Hastings for some time past, will in future act as private trainer to Mr. H. 13. Troutbeck. This mil mean that Spain and others will have to find new quarters. Spain, who is owned by the Wanganui sportsman, who. runs as "Mr. R. Karelle," ivill probably go to Wanganui, and £nter the stables of ,}}[■ Rayner, who was very successful -with Shannon Lass for tho same owner.

Mr. W. Duncan and F. Tilley arrived back from Sydney this week, with the youngsters purchased at tho Sydney sales. The yearlings are already at Fordell and the Cardinal Beaufort— Collarene is much admired.

At a reccnt meeting of the Hawkesbury Jockoy Club a large hole was burnt in tho floor of the grandstand, presumably by a careless smoker throwing down a match, .'As a consequence smoking is to be prohibited in the stands in fnture.

The Newcastle Cup meeting opens today, when tho Cup, one mile and three furlongs, will bo run. A very big field is engaged. Amongst those handicapped are the New Zealanders Toa Tere, 9st. 71b., and Margarita, 7st. 101b. Three is engaged in tho sprint events on both days.

The, Bezonian—Snowstell colt,, which realised 750 guineas when sold at the Sydney sales, has gone into tho stables of Trainer J. Andrews, who :s located at Canterbury Park.

At the yearling 6ales in Sydney the Caulfield trainer, E. A. Connolly, gave 500 guineas for a half-brother by the imported Don Reyhaldo to Lavendo, the Caulfield Cup winner.

The ex-New Zealander, Ronald Camcran ,rode two winners at the.'Wangaratta meeting last month.

The Waikanae-bred Bourlang (Beconran —Nerve), who has dons-so Iveli in Victoria, was a ruhnor at tho Adelaide meeting early this month. The two-year-old colt was making his first appearance m open company, and started "ffvo'uritc, but he was drawn badly at the barrier. an<! failed to show up.

The New Zealand-bred Carlita only won <£200 at the-recent AJ.C. meeting, but her total for tho season 'is ,£6435. Since she' commenced racing her earnings total JJ15.405, the result of 12 firsts. 7 seconds, and 7 thirds.

Golden Slipper, who brought eucli a high price at tlie boom Steatt sale, was not a success in Australia; and apparently tho first of her proi'sny, Golden Shoe, is in the same category. 1 Tho last-named showed pace in her races, but she was always infirm, and has gone to the stud. , King George recently presented tno stallion Anmer (Florizel ll—Guinea Hen) to the Canadian Government for remount breeding. Anmer was tho horse which in the JJorby actually won by Cra'ganour, but eventually awarded to Aboyeur, was the victim of an attack by a-suil'ragetto. When the field had reached Tottenham Corner a woman rushed on to 'the course, and endeavoured to stop tho wearer of the- Royal colours. The' horso crashed Into the suffragette, who received such severe injuries that she died' a few days later. L. Hewitt, who won the Coogee Handicap on Secret Service at the Easter meeting at Raudwick, would still appear to be able to go to scab at a lianay weight, as he rode Bst. on this occasion. | /Postillion has again been turned out on his owner's station. The black horse was in a very bad way for some time, and is unlikely to race again. It is reported locally that the Boniform gelding Moulu has been sold to A. Hall, of Wallgamii. The last-named is very keen on jumpers, and probably, ho intends to try the Yaldhurst-bred one over fences. - Jockeys F. Flynn and L. Traill returned to Hastings after the, first day's racing at Hawera to do some schooling work. Flynn-is going to Wanganui next week to junip Nita and out, or two others there. Marton, who is now trained by W. R-ay-ner at Wanganui, will be ridden in his Wanganui and Ellerslie engagements by W. Young. The old Malachi gelding is to be tried over brush fences, and if ho takes kindly to them such a fine stayer should lie a success over a course like Ellerslie, Zola is the early fancy for the Connolly Handicap at Wanganui, in which he will be ridden by . tho local light-weight, R. Reed. The Sweet Simon horso got in a few pounds better than his connections cxpcctcd. After being passed in at 100 guineas, tho stallion Achilles was sold privately by Messrs. Chisliolm and Co. for . 500 guineas, and goes to Queensland. "ho I two Achilles youngsters, which failed to find, buyers in the ring, were subsequently placed at 200 guineas apiece.
