NOTES AND. COMMENTS

IBr (3lbkcos.i The 'Ashburton County Racing Club's autumn meeting will open to-day. Eongaueve in the Hurdles • and Revnl in the i f- e . Handicap were included in tho published list of acceptances in error. Crispeen, winner of the Brighton Hurdles at Ellerslie, was given away as a foal by his breeder (Mr. H.' Weal).' He has boen raciug a long time, but this is the first important race the Spalpeen gelding has won. ■ ■ • Crown Pearl is to be given a race in hack hurdle ovents at the Egmont meeting. The Coronet' gelding should be well able to take the place of Royal Arms, who broke down badly at Ellerslie. Glen Nevis, who showed fair form in hack hurdle races, is now an inmate of J. Peacliey's staWes at Wanganui. A. new-comer at Porirua is a yearling filly by Martian from Hebrew Maid. She will carry the colours of Mr. R. Acton Adams; Amber and "Whito is to be tried orer hurdles during the coming winter/ Her owner (Air.- C. F. Vallance) generally keeps a jumper or two, and with Nedra he -won the Wellington Steeplechase.

The old Sou'wester gelding Coy, formerly an inmato off .T, Hathaway's Awapuni stables, was shot jit Dunedin last week. The old fellow won many races in the Otago district, tut lie had become very infirm, and it was decided to dispatch him. Tlie victories of Kilboy and Killena at Riccarton placed Mr. J. B. Reid at tho liend of the list of winning owners, with tEIISO. Sir Geo. Clifford, with ,£lO less, caino second on tho list. Scotch Melody, who used to race in M.' Hobbs's colours, haa been' sold to Mr, J. D. Keid, and goes to the Ellerelie stud. The Great Autumn Handicap winner Marc Antony is to "be entered for the next Melbourno Cup. Martins, who reads well in tho Ashburton Cup to-day, will be ridden by J. Olsen, who was up ,on him when lie scored at Riccarton.' A notable feature of the entries for the big jumping events at Ellerslie in June is the dearth of new horses. Entries for all events at the Otaki meeting to bo held on June 3 and 5 close on Monday next at 8.30 p.m. Morning, list. 21b., is top weight in the Kaiamu Hurdles at Hastings to-morrow, but if anything like at his best the National winner may be a good favourite. At Waipukuvnu on Easter Monday he prevailed in a flat race. Thinking that perhaps Court Martial would go cheaply in Sydney a couple of Christchurch sportsmen commissioned a buyer on tho other sido to secure her at 200 guineas, bu,t as she brought 3GO guineas sho was allowed to go. While being schooled at Awapuni on Saturday morning Waiotui'e (trained by J. Ilalhaway) crashed through one of the hurdles. with Hie result that her rider (.T. Kelly) had his collarbone put out, besides receiving minor injuries to the head. Luckily, ICellv was wearing a skull protector," which" was considerably dented. Since the autumn meeting a number of jumpers Imvo been schooled at Riccarton, in view of the _ Asliburton, Oamaru, and other forthcoming fixtures. Amontst their nuinbsr are Resemblance, Con the Sluuighraun, Sai'tosta, Deltonia, Pes, and Carrie. Tho grandstand oil tho Moroa Racecourse being built for the South Wairarapa Trotting Club, is nearly finished, says our Cireytown correspondent, and will be used at the forthcoming lijeeting. It is to accommodate nearly (or about) '100 people. The old stand was destroyed by lire a short time ago. The other buildings are being renovated, and the tolfllsator house is being enlarged.
