RUA'S FOLLOWERS
TWO COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Rotorua, May 3. To-day, Horomona, one of Itua's followers, was charged with doing bodily harm to Constable Faliey, with intent to prevent Rua's arrest. Evidence was given that ho 'tried to kick- Fahey in the stomach- and groin, and struck him on the left hand with a stick, SeniorSergeant Cassells" batoned him, t<nd ho was secured. Horomona was committed for trial.
This afternoon I'ukepuke -Kauara was committed for trial at Auckland. Bail was refused. The charge was one of attempting to discharge firearms at Constable Skinner with intent to resist the arrest of Rua. The evidence showDU' that tho Native picked up the rifle dropped by Constable Faliey. when ho was struck by Horomona. Accused twfee attempted to lire the rifle at.Skinner, but could not, the safety-catch'beins locked. Constable Shearman covered him, but seeing tho catch of his rifle locked, did not fire. Accused, who dropped the rifle and bolted, was pursued and caught. , INQUEST ON TOKO RUA AND MAIPI,
CORONER'S UNQUALIFIED OPIN- • lON. , By Telegraph—Press Association. Rotorua, May 3. The inquest on Toko Rua and Te Mafpa Was resumed this afternoon. Rusbton and Rogers state* that they fired at deceased, and Believed that they and Constable Maloney killed them. ; Mr. Dyer said ho could not give a formal verdict, not -having seeii the bodies, but unofficially his unqualified opinion' .was that deceased .'were killed by the' police .in the' execution of their ffuty and in 'self-defence. The inquest would bo adjourned sine die, for the Minister to take it further if h e wishes.
