ASSISTING DISCHARGED SOLDIERS

The information supplied to-day by the Attorney-General concerning the work of the Discharged Soldiers' Information. Department, which is under his charge, is of a very gratifying nature. It is plain from the facts disclosed that the Department established for the purpose of assisting soldiers returned from the field of action is fully alive to its responsibilities, and is displaying that activity which the public would wish. It is really somewhat surprising to learn that so many men havo returned from the front. The figures now disclosed show that at\the present time there are no less than 4376 men on the register of the Department; that is to say, of the total number of men returned from abroad the Department has succeeded in getting into touch with over 4000. Gf these nearly 3000. havo been interviewed at their homes by representatives of ii.ho Department, and employment has been found for a substantial proportion of those who needed it. O! [course many do not need the help of I the Department, hut it is satisfactory I to know that so far as Ties within his power the Minister in charge spares no effort to get into touch with the whole of the men who return, with a view to rendering assistance where it is required. Me. Herdman has acted wisely in making known the particulars of the work being, accomplished by his -Department. The people generally who arc anxious that all that is possible should be done for our returned soldiers should be not only gratified. with the results so far achieved in this particular direction, but should be stimulated_ and encouraged to assist by notifying the Department of openings for. the employment of such men as are available. Me. Herman has tackled the task allotted him with hiscustomary thoroughness, and can point to an admirable record of achievement. He and his officers havi succeeded in quickly organising a working system which promises to be productive of excellent results, but the co-opera-tion and assistance of employers will be increasingly needed, and this, we have no doubt, will be fully and freely given.-
