NOTES AND COMMENTS
■ ■. IBr <3lb;icoi.l . The racing fixtures set down for this week are the Ashburton County -.Racing Club's Autunin Meeting, - which takes place on Thursday and Friday, and the Hawke's Bay ' Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting, which' is to be held on Friday and Saturday. . The suspension of B. Deeley for three months wdl mean that the crack horseman will have to forego all the important meetings for the rest of the season. There has been a big -weeding out in the Ashburton Cup, and of the fourteen horses weighted only seven paid up. O.tenhope. list. 31b., is top-weight, while Martins, who .showed -winning . form at Riccarton, is next.ivith a concession of Gib. Snub. Bst. 21b., has been paid up for, and he will probably be seen out for the last time this season. In the-Grove Handicap, sixvfurlongs, the Great Easter Handicap -winner-Reva! has lOst. 31b., and Is giving away a lot of weight to the other
competitors. . It is stated that there is a likelihood'of this horse accompanying the members of Mr. Hobbs's team of Melbourne on May IS.
Hi-; wins in the A.J.C. St. Leger and A ..I.C. Plate conclusively prove Kandos to bo I he best three-year-old of the season in Australia. Kandos claims as his sire anil clam two very smart performers in Abundance, who was a crack three-year-old, and Fulminate, a speedy mare, who, amongst other races, contested the Newmarket Handicap in 1001, and was runnerup to 'Wakeful. Kandos is evidently a great stayer, and it was this qualification which , enabled him to wear down Cetinge at tho, end of the St. Leger, while two proved' stayers in Wishing Cap and Ulva's Jslo followed. the three-year-old home in the Plate, throo miles.
The Treiitham-trained Immer is being railed to Hastings this morning, and will bo raced there on Friday and Saturday. The Martian mare is tho only local .horse at the' meeting. Trickery and Roseland, two members of I Gi' Reed's Trentham team, are under or- ' ders for the Marlborough meeting on I May 17 and' 18. | Amongst the nominations for the Marlborough meeting is the Winter Cup canI didate Parky, who has not won a race since being successful in the big liiccarton milo three years ago. Tho l'orirua horse picked' up a nail soon after that race, and it has been.a source of trouble to him since. His owner' is now hopeful that tie will stand a preparation. G. Jones, who used to train Chortle, Multiply, and Co. for tho .Messrs. Williams at Gisborne, was riding -at the Waipukurau meeting on Easter Monday. He is now attached to P. Neagle's stables at Napier. While contesting the - Steeplechasers' Flat race at Williamstown on Easter Monday, the New Zealand-bred gelding, The Pole, broke down badly, and his owner has decided not to persevero further with him; H; R. Ca"irn3 won the race on The Golfer, who started favourite. Entries for all events at the Otaki meeting close on Monday next at 8.30 .p.m. The Rankawa Cup, of 500 sovs., is tho principal, event at the- meeting. Since he has been in Sydney Reputation has won- slightly over .£3-100 in stakes, .so it cannot be said that . the black horse's trip has been ti failure. The acceptances for the llawke's Bay Clip 'number IG, and. all of the principal horses, with tho exception of Chortle, have stood, their ground. The Porangahau Handicap, six furlongs and a half, lias drawn an acceptance of ten, but the -field is anything but a classy one.
