ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS.
'Geo. T. Stewart."—The "curtain of lire" is an effective means of. preventing the enemy from coining forward to attack, or if lie has already attacked, and is engaged, for preventing his reserves from coming np. Picture a front of, say, 300 yards, attacked by the enemy. Behind tha defenders, well back, are our guns. The attack is being successfully held, but reserves are advancing to support the enemy's first attack. Our gunners accordingly .set their shell fuses for the shrapnel to burst along the, intervening space between the fighting lino and the enemy's reserves, and maintain a continuous fire along that zone—so continuous and concentrated a fire that the result, is like a prolonged hailstorm beating down along that space. This is the "curtain of lire."
