At the Sailors' Friend Society last night a tine programme of music and recitation was provided by the Mayoress (Mrs. J. P. Luke) and party. During; ■the evening refreshments were handed round. A hearty vote of thanks to the performers was moved by the Missioner (Mr. Moore), and responded to by the Mayoress. The following contributed to the programme: Madame Mueller, Misses Griffith, Carrington,'Martin, C. Dickie, Davies, and Mueller, and Mr. Rover (Celtic Glen). At the piano was Miss Chapman. There were about forty people present .it the meeting convened by the Brooklyn Recruiting Committee last evening in continuation of the one held a week ago. Mr. Geo. Frost occupied the chair, and there were representatives present of the Brooklyn section of the National Reserve and the local School Committee, who had been asked to co-operate. To determine what action should be taken in the district to gain recruits, the chairman moved pro forma that the committee undertake to canvass the district on the lines of the Government Recruiting Board's scheme, but after some discussion an amendment was moved by Mr. Cooper, and secluded by Mr. Wilson, that the ' residents of Brooklyn are of opinion that the Government should deal with the .problem of recruiting by bringing in conscription. Mr. Benfley, an American, has photographed 2000 snoiv crystals, and no two ir« exactly alike. The Boys' Home of the Presbyterian Orphanage and SociaJ Service Association, at Bcrhampore, will be opened nt 3 p.m! Un Saturday. Messrs. Williams and Kettle, Ltd., laud agents, Napier, advertise a .grazing and fattening property of 12G0 acres for sale. Miss Valeric Corlis?, LR.A.M., teacher of the pianoforte, will receive prospective pupils at the Bristol Piano Company from 11 t.i 12 a.m. daily. Mr. H. E. Leighlon will auction tho five-roomed residence of Mr. C. .7. Calvert, in Epuni Street, Lower Hutt, at the Chamber of Commerce, on 'Friday afternoon.
