In accordance with notice given, Councillor List moved at last evening's meeting of the Petone Borough Council: "That all single men in the council's employ who have not enlisted and presented themselves for examination for active service shall be dismissed after May 1, 1916:" Councillor Anderson seconded the motion. A considerable discussion ensued, which at times showed signs of becoming "lively." Finally, on the suggestion of the Mayor, the motion was altered to read as follows:—"That all single men in the employ of tie council be appealed to to offer their services, and a guarantee giyen. that their dependants should be provided for' in 'their ."absence, and on tlieir return the council will do all in its power to assist them in obtaining employment, and. that their attention be drawn to the council's system ofinsurance." The motion, as amended, was carried.
