PROHIBITED PERSONS

RESPONSIBILITY OF LICENSEES. By Telegraph.—(Special Correspondent.! Wanganul, May 1. -- The responsibility of licensees of publichouses in respect to prohibited persons was emphasised : in the local Court to-day, when Mr. Kerr, S.M., gave judgment in a licensing case heard at Martfin recently, when Charles Barnes, licensee of the Ben Nevis Hotel, Turakina, and his wife were prosecuted for supplying a prohibited person with drink. The evidence showed that a week prior to the issue of the order. Coiu stable Squires visited the hotel, and informed the licensee and his wife that there were intentions to have an ordon issued a week later, and warned tbeni not to serve the person concerned after that date. On the evening of the Court day notice appeared in a paper that an order had been issued, but there had apparently been no official notice sent from the Court until several weeks later. In the meantime the wife of the licensee supplied liquor, thus causing proceedings to be taken. The defendants counsel argued that a more newspaper paragraph was not sufficient notice, and His Worship con> sidered ■ that a constable's warning, coupled with a paragraph in the paper, was sufficient, : and gave' a decision against the defendants, f fining' Mrs. Barnes £5 and her husband £1 and costs.
