PATRIOTIC FUNDS

THE -"DOMINION" LISTS. WOUNDED SOLDIERS' FUND. iG.s. d. Previously acknowledged ........ 377 10 2 James Wilson 0 10 0 A. Bennie 0 5 0 Total X 378 5 2

The Otago Women's Patriotic Association held a. street epilation, organised on a small scale, on .Friday, and as a result of their efforts- they realised oyer £200, which is for the benefit of the Countess of Liverpool Parcel Fund. H.R.H. Princess Louise paid a surprise visit to the New. Zealand Hospital at Walton-on-'f hames on January 29, and expressed her pleasure at everything she had seen in the building. Since the hospital was started no fewer than 526 patiouts have been admitted, and 272' have been discharged; while, on January 31, there wero 251 wounded men in hospital, as compared with 100 on the last day of the old year. The expenditure for the month of January amounted to £1418, but against this has to be set the War Office contribution of £747, being 3s. per patient per day. No fewer than 90 major operations have been performed since the opening of the hospital, and 195 skiagrams have been taken.

Among the audience who listened to the lecture which was given by Chap-lain-Captaiu Aligns MacDouald about a month ago in Wellington about the hospitals in Cairo wero ar number of ladies, upon whom it made a lasting impression, and as a result they have formed themselves into a committeo to tvork for the chaplain's fund for sick and wounded soldiers in hospital. One of their efforts will take the form of an afternoon, which will be held in St. John's Schoolroom on Friday afternoon, May 12, at which there will be stalls for the sale of cakes, sweets, flowers, jam, produce, etc., and in the evening an excellent concert is to be given. It will be remembered that the chaplain told his hearers what a difference ll made to the lads in hospital when tlioy knbw that their: gifts came from New Zealand, were made by New Zealand .[lauds; and he described how it was possible to gratify tlio last wish of a dying man with money which came from the gift funds which were in his care. These gifts of money enabled him and the other chaplains to perform many acts of mercy, some of which were not easily gratified. It- is to augment this fund that these ladies, are working.
