BICYCLE THIEF PINED
At Pe'tone Worday, before Messrs. J. W. M'Ewan and A. Coles, J.P. s, Frederick Butterworth was charged with stealing three bicycles. Sergeant I'.orster, for the police, stated that accused had been convicted at Lower Hutt on two similar charges. Two of the machines in tho'present instance had. been recovered, but ono was missing. Tho police sorgdant also mentioned that one of the stolen bicycles belonged to the Post and Telegraph Department, and its disappearance might hare caused serious consequences. Accused stated that since tho death of his wife last year he had had depression of mmdand had suffered from insomnia. He had no intention of stealing the machines—he had merely borrowed them. Tho one that had not yet been traced had been left by him in Manners Street. The Bench, in stating that tho offence could not be overlooked, fined the accused £2 on each 'of two charges, and £2 and the value'of tho bicyclo on the third charge, or in default seven days' imprisonment on each charge, tho sentences to be cumulative. The Bench also recommended that Butterworth should be medically examined by tho authorities in the event of his going to gaol. '
