SERVICES AT PETONE
At Petone last evening-,, the PalaceTheatre was crowded for the united memorial service, the Mayor (Mr. J. W. H'Ewan) presiding. Prayers were offered up by, the Bev. G. J?. Stephenson (Anglican) and . the Rev. Angus M'Bean (Methodist), the first-named reading 2 Samuel I and John XXV. An impressive address was delivered by. the Kev, A. Bruce 1 Todd (Presbyterian). In the course of his remarks, the Rev. Bruce Todd referred to the price paid for freedom throughout • the history of the British Empire, and stated that liberty could-only be purchased liy bloodshedding. He believed that the bravo lads at Gallipoli,. who had been sent to do' an impossible task, had taught us many lessons, and as the Easter message was that out of suffering conies comfort, so ho believed that out of evil good would ensue, and if the nation rose to a higher plane, then the fight would not have been waged in vain. The proceedings terminated with the singing of the .National Anthem; a' combined choir, under Mr. Ackroyd, leading. A patriotic and recruiting meeting was held later in the evening, at which the Trentham Camp Band rendered several selections. Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.P., spoke on lines similar to liis previous addresses. ■' ' ' ; ■
Captain Hardlinm, V.C., w.ho followed, related some incidents that had occurred at Gallipoli, and put in an earnest appeal to the eligible young men to "get Into It.'" The speaker, who was warmly 'applauded throughout his address, again signified his own intention of "getting back into. it.""
