The Kaiser, for reasons of . astute politics, or foreseeing an inevitable social and democratic post-war wave, ostentatiously manifests interest in So* cialists. He. congratulates tliem and decorates them for acts of courage at the front. He told a Socialist noncommissioned officer that tlie Socialists had saved Germany, and reminded Hen Scheidemann that he never opposed Marxian economics. _ The Kaiser added; "Now that the Socialists are upholding ' patriotism, order, and discipline, the gulf between us is narrow. Germany in : the leading Socialist State."
