FOR FROZEN CARGO
MORE SHIPS TO COME IN MAY
GOOD NEWS FOR EXPORTERS
Owing to the loss by misadventure of two insulated steamers recently it appeared that there would be a serious shortago of outward freight space for May loading of refrigerated cargo in New Zoaland jjorts,, and as a result a somewhat serious state of thingsthreatened in _ the frozen meat trade. Stores are filling rapidly, and it was feared that at least some companies would havo to" curtail their operations unless some relief could be given them. For sonie weeks the Prime Minister has been in communication with the Imperial Government and tlie Australian Governnient on the subject, endeavouring to have diverted to New Zealand any insulated ships that possibly could bo spared. It appears that his representations have been for he has just received from the High Commissioner tho following cablegram:— _ "In of representations referred to in my telegram of April 12, the Admiralty havo released two linsulated' steamers for the conveyance of Australian wheat, , and it is fully expected that, several Australian transports will bs, sent to New Zealand to load frozen meat during May.. Particulars as to available steamers will he telegraphed to the Wellington Tonnage Committee from Sydney. The Board of Trade request that in loading any such transports you should now give priority firstly to beef, and secondly, to mutton, as they are required for troops." This telegram in one particular scema to contradict a previous statement of the Prime Minister that the Board of Trade had requested that first prefer, ence should be given to beef, and second preference to cheese. Tlie fact is that this preference still holds as the general rule to be followed, but for a special reason it is> varied in regard to the loading of these particular ships
