GOOD FRIDAY SPORTS
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—l have read with deep interest the letter of the Rev. Ernest I. Sola. Other Churchos have, as has been proved,'a larger'.percentage in the Expeditionary Force than he gives, us credit for. -.'While'' this must bo noted, we unite with him in regret and protest against arrangements for Good Fridav being observed as "snorts day" in military camps. We are fully aware of the great responsibility resting on ithe Defence Department at this time. We wish to assist those who have control in every way, but surely a better .tray could be found of keeping Good Friday.-We noted your correspondent uses words, "Nonconformist brethren." Wo can resume discussion of the word "Nonconformist"' after peace with victory lias come. The ■word is a misnomer, specially so in New Zealaud. Wo join with him, hone the • less, in protest against proposed arrangements for "sports day" bring held on Good Friday in our military camps. A better way, satisfactory to all, couldbe found. We do not desire nor practise a joyless ''Christianity, but-for everything there is a fitting time: The words of Douglas Jerrold' might be applied to many things now happening. "I am' , convinced,"'he says, "that the world .will get tired of this eternal guffaw at all things. After all, life has something serious in it. It cannot all be a comic history of humanity."—l am, ' .''MEMBER OF PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. Wellington South, April 18, 1916.
