THE TURF
NOTES AND COMMENTS [By Glencoe. 1 , Acceptances-for the Wairarapa meeting, which 'Opens on Saturday, close tomorrow night at 8.30 o'clock. Acceptances.for the Waipukurau meeting close to-night. A reminder is given to owners and trainers by Mr. Edmund Goodbehere, that acceptances for all first-day events at the Feilding meeting, including Waiata Stakes and Maiden Stakes, run on the second day, close at 8.30 o'clock sharp to-night. Final payments for the Great Easter and Autumn Handicaps are due on Wednesday. Desert Gold has already.won twelve races this season, and as in the Great Northern St. Leger and Oaks there will be practically no opposition to the flying Ally, her three-year-old victories will probably total fourteen. Nones has been left in the Oaks and St. Leger at Ellerslie, but as tho filly was taken hack to Riccarton at the conclusion of the Wellington meeting, there is. not much likelihood of her making the trip north. Considering the way Battle Eve finished in his Wellington and Awapuni engagements, the opinion is freely expressed that he would have had a chance in the Groat Easter Handicap at Riccarton. A 6, however, his stable companion, Flying , Start, has been left in the seven furlongs race the only inference is that he is the better of the pair. Exceptionally good entries have been received for the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Cup Meeting, to be held next month. Included in tho entries for the,. Hack Hurdles is the Derby winner, Bon Reve.' Trainers R. J. Mason, R. O'Donnell, and the Cutis Bros, have strong teams engaged. Mr. H. M'Manaway, of Bulls, has, received a letter card from Lieut.-Colonel Mcldrum, in which he states that he has had -an attack of bronchitis, but was rejoining his company on March 1. Ho also writes that his horse Haraurana (Kilcheran— Spring), which was presented to Lieut.-Colonel Meldrum by Mr. H. M'Manaway, won a race at Suez an Feb" ruary 12, returning,.£6o and ".£3l 6s. for a place. Hamurana.was trained by W. Dwyor, who enlisted from Hunterville. Though nothing has been made public yet, it is understood that the Feilding Jockey Club will follow tho lead of Riccarton, and postpone its days races so as not to clash with "Anzac Day." At .tho Southland meeting on Thursday ft. Berry was disqualified for two.years for obviously pulling Redshire in the President's Handicap, won by Redowa. Mr. C. G. Dalgety has decided to send Warstep and Stepdancer to the imported oolferino next season. Tho Waikanap stud received a good advertisement at Awapuni, when Martial Air, Tinkler, Interlude, and Hushabye, all of whom first saw daylight at Waikanae. won races. Mr. R. H. Skipwith has been appointed starter to the Ashburton Racing Club, and also to the Avondale Jockey Club. Multiply, Chortle, and Multiplication, who are engaged at Ellerslie on Saturday and Monday next, will probably compete at Avondale before, returning home. In addition to tho stake, the Afarlborough Racing Club is giving a very handsome silver rose bowl for tho Marlborough Cup, to bo run at the Autumn Meeting on May 17 and 18. This is a very popular raco with North ' Island owners, and is expected to be well supported. As all the hack handicap events are for one hundred sovereigns, and as tho club has allowed very liberally for 6ccond and third horses, there should bo a good response from this 6ide. Ono race n< this meeting ahvays easy to pick up, and seldom much sought after, is the Open Flying Handicap, of 125 sovereigns. It should fill better than it does; Nominations close with Mr. L. Griffiths, secretary. Blenheim, on Wednesday, April 20.
