NOTES AND COMMENTS

[Br Gi.encoe.]

The brood mares from Mr E. J: AVatt's stud, which . are to go under the hammer the Sydney sales at Easter, are to be shipped from Wellington on Thursday next. They include Rose Sea ton (dam of Merton and. Wee Hose); All Blue, by Merriwee, from ~Peivene J s dam,' Blue Water; Bonbon, by Boniform from Barley Bree, the halt-sister to Malster and dam of Royal Scotch, etc.; Dnmo Rumour, by Achilles—Rumour; Orlay, by Royal Artillery—Oralene; Tapono, by Medallion —Pdtrio; Esmeli, a sister to Tuinut by Merriwee—lsmeuc; Barley Bree, by The Cardinal—Barley; AYordy Warfare, by Carbine's son; Canipfire, from Palaver; and Musette, by Cuirassier—Matamataharakiki. Sasanolf is an unlikly starter at any of the Easter meetings. It is quite likely that When next he Taces it will be as a gelding.' St. 'Gate has been tried over brusli fences at Wanganui, and is reported to have acquitted himself well. Cuirosettia (Currasow—Poinsettia), who contested tho. Selling Raco at tho Southland meeting,' is a very old performer, and rivals Sea lting and Medallist in this respect. -He formorly carried the colours of Mr. W. T. Hazlett, president of the Southland Racing Club. At the conclusion of the racing at Awapuni Mr. G. L. Stead lodged ■ a complaint against R. Reed for his handling of Halina, and after voluminous evidenco had been taken thevjnquiry was adjourned till yesterday morning, when it was announced that Heed had/been cautioned. With the local meetings over, trainers are now making a move for the big gatherings at Easier. After the first day nt Awapuni, T. Quintan came down to Trentham to pick up Eligible and Blackall, who are to race at 11 iccarton. J. i\ Jefferd took Chortle and Multiplication to Ellerslie last evening, and it is understood tho Karamu team will also race at Ellerslie. P. Davies will go north with Desert Gold for the Auckland Racing Club's Easter Meeting, where the champion has engagements in tho Oaks and St. Loser. Balboa and Tcte-a-Tete will l>e sent south fov the C.J.C. meeting. G. Price, with the Highden team, will leave for the south on Tuesday next. As he was not riding at Awapuni, the light-weight jockey, W. Bell, took up a collection for the widow of the lato G. Itai'chant, and during tho two days the Highden, horseman collected a considerable sum. It was common talk at Awapuni that in new of the poor response from owners for

the Awapuni Gold Cup, the event was likely to l)e missing from next year's programme. It- is a thousand pities that Nones, Eligible, and Chortle weTe not sent out to oppose Desert' Gold, as the result would then have been a real test of tho merits of the horses named. If the leading? owners do not support weight-l'or-ago events, they cannot complain if tho racing clubs delete them from future programmes.

Jockeys W. Bell, R. Hatch, C. Emerson, A. Oliver, A. Reid, H. Young, and P. Brady will be riding at Tauherenikau on the opening day.

Seadown will be sent south on Monday night to fulfil his engagements at the C.J.C. Easter Moetiag.

It is now reported that L. Wilson has to ride lteval in tho Easter Handicap at Riccarton, so that another rider will have to bo found for Oxenhope.

Tho local light-weight, A. Reid, is to have the mount on Marc Antony in the Great Autumn Handicap at RiccarUiK.

Gunrest, winner of the big handicap on both days at the Southland meeting, is duo of the successful Calibre • tribe, and n-as purchased in December last at Mr. Grigg's . clearing sale for 75gns. When he won the Southland Cup ho was making his first appearance in open company.

Ohiwai started second favourite in the concluding event at Awapuui, but she was never prominent. The Elysian filly has bad knees, and she will always be found to go better when the sting is out of the groumd. It was intended to give the Englishbred filly Marie Agnes a run at the Manawatu meeting, but .tho daughter of Maroo hurt her round bone recsntly, and is at present having a rest. > The Clareville . trainer, J. Gravestock, has sold his property and will in future reside at Opaki. ■ The Karamu team for the Auckland meeting will consist of Gladful, Hyttus, Hydrus, Centre,, and a maiden two-year-old, Honey Bee. ■
