There was a largo attendance, and a very busy afternoon was speiit by those present. The next Rod Cross tea will be held at Mrs. Parker's,' Hukaniri, on Wednesday, April 19.. Miss Speed (Hobson Street) has returned from a visit to Rotorua and Napier.

On .AVednesday the death took place at her late residence, Marjoribanks Street, of Mrs. Jeffries, wife of Mr. J. Jeffries. The deceased lady had been in comparatively good health until midday on Wednesday, when she was seized with a paralytic stroke shortly after mid-day, followed by /a second, her death occurring about four o'clock in the afternoon of ,tho same day. The lato Mrs. Jeffries' arrived in Hokitika from Victoria in the '60's, and until about eiyht years ago she lived 011 the. West Coast and fn , Nelson. Besides, her husbaud, Mr. J. Jeffries, of Wellington, she is survived by two daughters—Mrs. Torlbit, of Groymouth, and Miss Jeffries (Wellington). Of the sons, Mr., yilliiun Jeffries (Hokitika) and Mr. Ken Jeffries (Greymouth), are well known to West Coasters. One son is on active service, and two sons aro in the North Island. The late Mrs. Jeffries also leaves two brothers and a sister, who live in Victoria.

The monthly "at home," in connection with the W.C.T.U., was held at the residenco of Mrs. Wilson, Britannia Street, Petoue, on Wednesday. _ A large number of members attended, including visitors from town. A good address was delivered by. the Kev, Mr,. Stevenson, which was very much appreciated. Mrs.' Houldcr, from Wellington, also spoke." A song was sung by Mr. Hope, after which afternoon tea was dispensed by the hostesses. Votes of thanks wero heartily' accorded to all who had helped to make the afternoon pass so pleasantly . .

The monthly .meeting of the W.C.GYU. was held in the Clmrch of; Christ, Petone, on Tuesday, Mrs. Rowso presiding. A paper was read, sent by Mrs. Burd, delegate at the convention, introducing a patriotic scheme to raise money to liclij onr soldiers at the front. It was proposed tliat it be further discussed at the next meeting.

Protection of Women. A meeting of the Society for tho Protection of Women and Children was held yesterday, Mrs. W. F. Ward presiding. There were present: Mesdaincs J. Kirkcaldie, G. Ponsonby, J. It. Glasson, W. A. Evans, D. M'Laren, Griffiths, Chatfield, and Miss Parlane. A large number of cases which had been investigated were reported upon, and assistance given.
