SOUTHERN MARKETS. By Chrlstchurch, April 14. The wheat market is quiet. Quito as much {,-ruiti is offering as apparently is wanted, and the demand is not very active. Tuscan is still selling at 4s. 2d. to 4s. 3d.; Hunter's, 4a. 4d. to 4s. 5d.; pearl, 4b. fid. to is. 7d. at. country- stations, but tho latter, offered in a straight line, would probably command a little rnoro money.' The demand for oats is not very brisk in view of tho weaker tone of the Southland market. A fairly large quantity of Garton's was purchased at ?,s, at country stations, Potatoes are weaker, a larger (luantity now offering. Sales have been made at £4 10s. - More buyers are offering £4 ss, at country stations. A difficulty in getting shipping space per the Auckland eteamers for that port- is expected next week. Pollard is scarcer, and is now quoted at £{ Ids., a rise of 10s. WOOL, SKIN, AND HIDE SALES. Tho fortnightly sales of wool, skin, and. hides were held yesterday by the various brokers. Messrs. Dalgety and Company, Limited, report that they offered a fairly large catalogue of (adgo aud bag wool, as well as sheepskins and. hides. Competition for wool was very keen, and, compared with last sale, prices were slightly hotter. Hides word, in good demand, and prices showed an increase of up to 2d. per lb. Prices for tallow were slightly easier than at last sale. . , , Messrs. Levin and Co. report that no wool-was offered, except a few odd fadges, the wool being held, for the next sale. Pine medium and coarse crossbred sheepskins wore stronger again by id. to i(l. Tho partial and conditional removal of tho embargo, where by the export of hides is permitted after tanncre have taken 10 per cent, of supplies at fixed prices, had tho effect of hardening prices to the extent of lid. to 2d. per lb. on all classgs. Messrs. Ahranam . and WilliamSr Ltd., report that wools and skins sold at last salos' prices. Since the embargo on hides has been altered to allow of SO per cent, of hides to be exported,. prices liavo advanced ljd. to 2d. per lb. • . - Messrs. Murray; .Roberts and Co. report that they submitted a catalogue of about 2000 sheepskins and 600 hides, besides a small quantity of wool in bags and fadges, and oddments; of tallow. Prices for wool and sheepskins were fully on a par with last sale, competition being general. There was "a, remarkably good sale, for hides, : prices showing an advance of lid. to 2d. per lb.-, due to the lightening of the embargo on export. Competition was keen and animated for all lines. Tallow sold at last sales' rates. ' Messrs.. W. and G. Turnbull. and Co., Ltd., report that prices for sheepskins ' were' on a par with last . sales' rates. Heavy hides showed at an appreciation up to 2d. per lb., this rise' being duo to the .Government's action in partially lifting, tho "embargo of this class of hides. Other sorts sold up to last sales' Tates. , , ' The New Zealand Farmers' Co-operativo Distributing Co., Ltd., advise that wool m ■fadges and - .bags sold at. rather better >ates than at the preceding sale, competition being more general on most lots of clean wool. Sheepskins were well competed for at full rates. Hides were in better domand as a result of the export ,embargo being modified, and prices show an odvanco .of ljd. to 2d, per lb. on some of the heavy-weights. •. . s : The Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, Teport that they offered a few bag lots of wool, and'considerable quantities of sheepskins and 'hides, and a few lots of tollow. The market for wool end skins was -rather' weaker than last sale, but hides and calfskins were higher by Id. to lid. per lb,, and in eome cases Zd. per lb. for sound lots, than last sales.. Heavy ox were sold UP to 12d* and cow hides to 10jd.; calfskins, froui lid. to 12id. for best. Sales wero also held by the United Farmers' Co-operative Association and the Wairarapa 1 Farmers'. The Bank of England discount rato was on January 2, 1914, reduced from 5 to 4i pel' cent., on January 22 it was reduced to 4 per cent., and on January 28 3 per cent. On July 30 the rate was raised to 4 per cent., and oil July 31 it was raised to 8 per cent., and on August 1 it was further advanced to 10 per cent. On August 6 tho rate was reduced to 6 per cent., on August 7 it was further reduced to 5 per cent- at which rate it notv stands.
