_ Tlio duties of treasurer of the Pat- I riotic Society have been undertaken by Mr. J. J. Colley, in succession to Mr. James M'lntosh. At the meeting of the society on Thursday evening Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.P. (chairman) paid a warm tribute to the' self-sacrificing patriotism of Mr. irintosli, and eulogised tho splendid work he has done as treasurer of the society. The vote of thanks and appreciation which he moved was carcied with the heartiest acclamation. Tho official conference on Thursday, between the friendly societies and tho Government took an unorthodox though graceful turn at the termination of the proceedings, when Mr. I. Salek, on behalf of a number of tho dolegatos, presented the only lady . present (a momber of tho Friendly Societies' Department) with a pair of gloves, in recognition of her excellent work in facilitating the business of tho conference, •flic hesitated at accepting the souvenir, owing to, the regulations of tho Service, but as these did not specifically mention "gloves," she took tho risk.
