MADE A FIRST-CLASS CHIEF

The King has conferred the rank and 6tatus of a first-class Chief of the Bombay Presidency for life on the Aga lihan, with a salute of eleven guns. . The ; honour is noteworthy because Aga Khan's authority is spiritual and riot territorial. The recipient has rendered great services to the Allies tjn'ough his influence amongst the Moslems. [His Highness the Aga. Khan 111 (Sultan Mohammed Shah) is the. grandson of Hasan All Shah, on whom the title was first bestowed, with a large pension,'for his services to the British Government. The present Aga Khan succeeded his father in 1885, becoming leader of the great Ismailiah section of the Mohammedan British subjects. In ,aßdition to the religious/training required by his position, he, unlike his predecessors, had a sound European education. He was thus eminently fit- [ ted both _ for the sacerdotal functions appertaining to his, spiritual position and for those social of a great and enlightened leader which he, was called upon to discharge by . virtue of that position. The distinction of a Knight Commander of the Indian . Empire was conferred upon him by Queen Victoria in 1897, and ho received- like recognition for his public services from the German Emperor, the Sultan of Turkey, the, Shah of Persia, and other potentates.]
