PRISONERS OF WAR

INSTRUCTIONS ABOUT GIFTS,

The Minister of Defence is still receiving, inquiries regarding- parcels for prisoners of war, and he has WTitten to an inquirer the following letter, which is of general interest:—

"parcels may be forwarded, post free, addressed to prisoners of war, care of the International Red Cross, Geneva. The rank, full name, number, and regiment of the prisoner of war should bo clearly set forth in the address, and the address should be written on both sides of the parcel. On no account must any notes or other written matter he placed insido the parcel. Parcels cannot be acccepted unless they_ are very strongly packed._ Ordinary thin cardboard boxes and'thin wooden boxes should not bo used, nor is a single sheet of ordinary brown paper a sufficient protection. It is sugested hy the 'Prisoners of War Bureau' thatthe Mowing packages should be used: Tin boxes, such as aro used .for packing biscuits, or strong wooden boxes, or several folds of stout packing paper. Parcels should be packed in such a way as not to impede examination by the censor. The name and address of the sender must be shown on tho parcel. Foodstuffs of a perishable . nature, and matches muet not be sent. On no account are newspapers to be used for wrapping up parcels, nor must newspaper cuttings be included in parcels. The Red Cross, Society suggests that the following articles are likely to prove useful to prisoners: Biscuits, butter, cake, cheeso, chocolate, coffee, and milk cocoa and milk, dried,fruit, prepared oats, sugar, light underclothing, packs of cards and games, tobacco."
