DISCHARGED SOLDIERS AS TEACHERS
'• : ADMISSION TO TRAINING COLLEGES. - The Hon. J. A. Hanan,. Minister of Education, stated yesterday that he had been considering a. proposal for admitting . discharged 6oldiers to the teachers' training colleges on rather more favourable terms than were offered to ordinary, students. He had made a recommendation which had been approved by Cabinet. Before a discharged soldier could be admitted to one of the four, training colleges he would require to bo iii possession of an intermediate certificate, or of evidence of two years' satisfactory ivork : at a secondary school or its equivalent, including' tho upper department of a district higlv school. He must also produce evidence as to good moral character, fur- , nish a certificate as to his general health, and make a'declaration of his intention to complete tho course of training and .become a teacher in a registered school. The- period of attcndanco'at the training college' will be not less than six months or more than twelve months, as the principal of the college may determine. The Minister said that it was desirable that suitable men among the returned soldiers should be given an opportunity to enter" the teaching profession. Obviously it was'better they should take a course of training rather than experiment on the children at country 1 schools. Tho allqwance payable to the soldier_ students would bo £20 per annum,' with a lodging allowance of £25 if the student had to live away from homo. The Miitister added . that he believed the proposals would result in the services of competent men being obtained for tho teaching profession, and would at the same time help men who had deserved well of their country.
