ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. "H.C.D." (Military Camp, Featherston).— (1) Reputation and Allegation in tho order named. (2) Warstep, the limit. NOTES AND COMMENTS [By Gleucoe.] The prospects for the' Hanawatu Rac ing Club's Autumn Aloeting are exceedingly bright, and everything points to a successful gathering.' As the profits are to go to the Wounded Soldiers' .Fund, everyono will hope to see a largo attendance. For the convenience of Wellington patrons a fast train will leave the course at 5.32 p.m.', and Thorndon will be readied at 10 p.m. The fields are ou tho largo side, and the acceptances must be a record for an Awapuni meeting. The Sires' Produce Stakes should be a good race, as all the leading stables are represented. The likely starters are Thestius, Wrestler, Nystad, Egypt, The Toff, Hyttuß, llene. la us, and Sasanof. After his good showing behind Desert Gold Sasanof may carry most support.
For the Awapuni Gold Cup Eligible Is reported to be an unlikely starter, so those who were ■ looking forward to a meeting between lie and Desert Gold will be disappointed. Sir. Lowry will probably start Desert Gold only, and unless Adjutant is allowed to take his place in the held there niay b,? only two runners..
The Auckiander, Tararu Jack, is. included amongst tho lot engaged in the Harare Hurdles, and the Maiden Plate field includes several two-year-olds, notably Tinkler and Grand Duchy.
in tho absence of Adjutant the Autumn Handicap bears a very open appearance, but if Dribble looks ready she and Orleans may carry the bulk of tho investments. Dertrada generally runs well on her own tr,ick, but it will be difficult to get a 7st. rider who can do her justice.
.The Linton Hack Welter Handicap is run over « mile and a distance, and tho extra journey will suit Spain, who waa finishiug on well in her. Ti-enthain races. Tliero is a field of twenty-eight in the Wuudhey "Hack Handicap, six furlongs, and many of them are able to go very fast. G<od beginners like Ring Lupin, Gang Awa', and Aurora should havn n lot in their favour, owing to thenability to get a position early. Att«r the acceptances for the Great Easter and Autumn Handicaps, sixteen horses hwld their ground in the firstnamed event, and fifteen in tho one mile and a half race. The horses engaged m both racfts aro Oxenhope and Sender.
The Auckland horseman A. J. il'Flinn has been «ugagcd to ride Arnake iu his engagements at the Jianawatu meeting. "Whalebone," in the Auckland "Star." savs:—"Same time ago it was stated that the Wellington Bacing Club had decided on having * schooling list to place horses that were fractious at the barrier, but, judging by the latitude allowed Sweet Tipperary this list is not strictly enforced. Ik the Plunket Nursery at'lron, tham on Thursday the rest of the held were compelled to take thoir places, while the boy on Sweet Tipperary was allowed to dismount and hold tho filly on, tho outside of the field, the assistant starter then giving the whole of his attention to the daughter of King's Guest after the boy was iput in the saddle again. No ,iorso is entitled to this consideration whilo others have . got to take _ their • chance, and it would be interesting to see what sort of a 'start it would be it there were a'dozen Sweet Tipperarys ;n the field. It is not the fault of other owners if 6ome horses will not face the barrier, and fractious horses should be at once ruled out if they will not come ■up after being given a reasonable chance. Eligible will probably uext race in the Challenge Stakes at Riccarton, in which he will meet a top-notch field but not Desert Gold. The othei starters are likely to include Flying' Start, Bimeter, Emperador, and the best Of the two-year-olds. . ■ ' ' At a meeting of- tho 'committee of the Gisborne Racing Club lost week it was decided tiiat the whole of the net profits from the Steeplechase Meeting, to bo hpld on Tune 15 and 17, with a minimum of .£SOO, be donated to the' Wounded Sol. diora* .Jfmul.' Considering his good foTm here it looks as if Mr. W. G. Stead is unlucky in not having Tiligiblo at Randwick for the A J.C. St. Leger at Easter, for with Pat. rebus under a cloud, and Cetigne; likely to run in the Doncaster - Handicap the field in the weight-for-age, race will bf weak.
The Perth paper, the "West Australian." mentions that the W.A.T.C. \Commiffee, with the object of assisting rej cruiting. have, following in the steps oJ the English Jockey Club, decided, not to grant licenses or registrations to 'persons of the ago required for military service unless they can show good reason for not answering'the call. The new rule does not applv to persons already licensed oi registered. Presumably it applies to book, makers,- as well as jockeys and trainers.
