MASTERTON NOTES
The Central Committee of the Wairarapa Hospital and Cha.rit.ablo Aid Board has been visiting the various institutions in the district during the last few days, with the object of gaining information to enable it to compile the estimates for the next few years. It is expected that, owing to the increased cost of medicines, foodstuffs, etc., and the necessity for increasing the accommodation at the Greytown Hospital, tho cost of administration will be mueh heavier this your than in former years. It is understood that application is to be made to the Master-ton Borough Council for permission to 'hold patriotic concerts in the Town Hall during tho winter mouths. Sharp frosts have been experienced in the Wairarapa during tile last two or i three nights. Several Wairarapa settlers had their wool clips aboard the steamer Ash.bu.r-' ton, which was torpedoed a few days ago. Two sections of land nt Carterton wore recently donated to the Wairarapa Carnival Executive, for disposal by art union, on condition that tickets to the value of .£IOO were-disposed of. Tho value of tho tickets sold exceeded the amount by £13. The Masterton A. and P. Association at its meetiug on Saturday last decided to purchase a section of land, adjoining the Solway grounds, from Mr. O. F. Vallance. \. A sum of £1046 was collected in members' subscriptions by tho Masterton A. and P. Association last year. This is-an increase ot *;256 over the amount collected in tho previous year; The art unions in connection with the Friendly Societies' carnival were drawn on Saturday night; The winners were as follow.—First prize, quarter-acre section in'Masterton, Arthur M'Govern; second prize, quarter-acre section in Masterton, W. it. Kemball; third prize, building site at Martinborough, Private F. Jackson, 12th Reinforcements; fourth prize, quarter-acre section at Eketahuna, South Wairarapa Committee; fifth prize, ten shares Wellington Farmers' Meat Company, A. Foreman, Langdale; sixth prize, ten shares Wellington Farmers' Meat Company, Druids Committee. One of the Carterton sections went to the Soldiers' Queen Committee, and the other to the taxi-drivers at the Fentherstou camp. • A number of oil paintings were also drawn.
