LOWER HUTT COURT

A sitting of the Lowei Hutt Court was held yesterday, Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., presiding. Messrs. Cudby and Wilkin, J.P.'s, were also on the Bench. !

For driving motor-cars at an excessive speed the following were each fined 505., with costs 7s and solicitors' foes 10s. 6d. :-—James Aldred, \V. E, Herbert, Dr. Sband, Capt. Sloane, Morris Kane, A. E. \Vhito> • Daniel Chap* man, E. W. Leeder, Michael Kearney, and Samuel Poarce

G. J. Howard and Ralph Muirheard, who each had two charges of a,similar nature preferred against them, wera fined 205., with'costs 17s. 6d. ( in each case. Clive 'Pparso was lined 55., with costs 75., for riding a. motor-cycle without a light. Oil a second charge of exceeding tho' speed limit, defendant ,was fined 205., with 7r». costs.' For tiding motor-cycles on the cyclc-track, Samuel Halse and Goo. Hartley were fined ss. and 7s. costs each. '

For failing to attond'drill, Patrick D. Rea was 'fined £2 • and 7s. costs: Subsequently ft rehearing of the case was granted by tlie Magistrate,, owing to, a statement faado by defendant, Michael Murray was fined 20s. and 7s. costs for a breach of a ' prohibition order.

' Caroline Swain proceeded against Charles Fisk for assaulting her son,' Frederick. Defendant stated that the boy had been stealing his grapes. The, information was dismissed.

Richard Tomkins sued 'Thomais Delaney for assault, c.ausing'actual bodily harm. The evidence showed that tho 'defendant on March 24 struck the plaintiff with an instrument on the jaw, causing him serious injury. The Magistrate fined Delaney £5, with witnesses's expenses £1 lis. and solicitor's fee £1 Is. Mr. Neavc appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. P. W. Jackspn for defendant. James Butler proceeded against Charles Smith for ' assault and for using obscone languago. After hearing the evidence tlie Magistrate dismissed tho charge of assault, and on the otheT charge defendant "was fined 405., with costs amounting, to £1 IBs. Mr. Et Ayson apiwared f«r plaintiff, and Mr. P. W. Jackson for defendant. Judgment was given for plaintiff hy defaiilt' in the civil action, Robt. Y. Shearer v. Charles Thorns, £3 ss. '9d., costs'ss.
