PATRIOTIC WAR LOAN,
Sir—There is a way for raising money during the war that I would suggest through your paper to tho Government, which so far'as I know has not yet been advocated. It is for the Government to invite applications for a "Patriotic War Loan." There is >so much money lying idle just now, a great part of which ,is earning little oi no interest, that it would be a : grand opportunity to show tho value of anyone's patriotism if they , would lend it to the Government in'amounts of £5 arid upwards, without any - interest,' There is no self-denial if interest is oarned, but 1 think there are many business .firms, societies,, and private nersons who would lend, without any in, terest if the 'matter was brought properly before them, and debentures for £5 and upwards issued a£ all post offices, repayable in five years from date of issue. This would. allow all those who_ are unable to give the'rhoney as a trift to show their patriotism' in a self-denying and practical manner by lending it. ' ■
Let each one who spends on selfish luxuries cut them down and take up some debentures, and they will be bek tor satisfied that they have done "theii bit" to win the war. —I am, etc.,' '
J. M. TURNBULL. Wellington, April 3.
