. - «■—•— BIGHT HON. SIR JOHN GORST, £.0. By Telegraph—Prera Association-Oobyrlßiit ; (Reo., April 5, 8.50 p.m.) . London, April 4. The Right Hon. Sir John, Gorst is dead. His death followed upon a brie® flt,tack of influenza. Sir John met with /' an. accident in 1914, and had never been the same since. Sir John Gorst was a brother-in-law •of Mr. F. G. Moore, of Masterton (tolegraphs our Masterton correspondent). He came to- Now Zealand in 1859,' and was : attached to the Native Office under Sir Francis Dillon Bqll. .He went to. the Waikato as Government Commissioner and Native school-teacher in 1861, but. in 1863 he was driven out by the Natives and returned to England. He last visited New Zealand as Commissioner for the Imperial Authorities to the last Christchurch Exhibition. He leaves five daughters and one son. Hip first wife died about two ago and he married again-, [The late Sir John Gorst was identified with the New Civil Administration in tlie 'sixties, when he held the post of Civil Commissioner of the Waikato (1861-63). He was the second son of the late E. C. Lowndes (formerly Gorst), and was twice married, his first ■wife (I860) being • Miss Mary Moore, daughter of. the late Rev. Lorenzo Moore, of Christchurcli. He was educated at Preston Grammar School, and at. Cambridge (fellowship and hon. fellowship, and Third Wrangler), and became a barrister of the Inner Temple in 1865 v He was Solicitor-General from 1885-S6; Under-Secretary ■ for India (1886-91); Financial Secretary to the Treasury (1891-92); Deputy-Chairman 'of Committee, House of Commons (1888I Lord Rector, Glasgow University (1893-94); Vice-President of Council on Education (1895-1902); British Pleni-. potentiary, Labour Conference, Berlin, 1890.] '
