NEW SUBURBAN TRAMWAY SECTION
■ , . _ -» _ TO BE OPENED THIS AFTERNOON. The. new Constable Street-Ci'aiyford Road section of the tramway system is to be formally opened by the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke),at,3p',m. ; ;torday:,a , lie importance cf this new link is obvious. Up till tho present tho City has only had one moans of tramway access to all the eastern suburbs—Hataitai, Kilbirnie North and South', Lyall Bay and Maranui, MJramar and Seatoun—a single line through, tho Moun't—Victoria tunnel. In view-of the rapid growth andgeneral expansion of all the suburbs named, it was imperative that better access should be provided for the conveyance of people thru ugh or over the hill, and it was-only a matter of which was the best method of doing it.. Another tunnel was urgently proposed by Hataitai people, and tho growth of the district may yet entitle that idea to some consideration, but in the meantime the Tramways Department thought that the best, means of relieving the strain on the Mount Victoria tunnel traffio was to extend the Constable Street line to South Kilbirnie. This has been done via Crawford Road, an easy grade compared with some of the Wellington streets, and this not only gives en alternative route' to the ottter suburbs,, but gives Wellington South a tramway connection with the district on the other side of the hill. Best of all, it eives another tramway route to the Brighton of Wellington"-Lyall Baywhich is yearly becoming a more popular ocean beach resort. ■ . The public is invited to attend the ceremony th*s afternoon.
