MASTERTON NOTES
A sale of stock in aid of the patriotic 'funds was held in Messrs. Turnbull and Co.'s Waipoua saleyards on Wednesday. There was spirited bidding, some of the stock being sold and re-sold. As a result of the effort it is expected that a sum of nearly £2000 will be added to tho funds.; The carnival queen election will be brought to a close on Tuesday next. It is confidently expected that the result of the carnival will be the addition of at least £10,000 to the Wounded Soldiers' and other funds. The settlors of the district continue to respond handsomely to the call for financial help. The Mauriceville County Council cannot agree with the resolution passed by a South Canterbury conference in favour of licensing all drivers of motorcars. ; Tho rains of the past fortnight have stimulated tbe pastures throughout the Wairarapa, and the result is a keen demand for stock. ' The amount collected in the Wairarapa district to date towards the Poor nf Great Britain and Allies' RclH bund is £90,199 4s. I'd. ■
