HATAITAI AFFAIRS

PROTEST AGAINST AN EYESORE.

When the Hataitai Land Company cut up its estate it dedicated a strip of land as a town hall reserve to the Melrose Borough Council, which land passed on automatically to the city when a Greater Wellington was created. It was in connection with this piece of laud that a deputation waited on' the Reserves Committee of tho City Council yesterday afternoon. 'The chief spokesman, Mr.H. D. Edwards, on behalf of tho Hataitai Ratepayers' Association, stated that the section had a frontage of about 50ft. or 60ft. to Waipapa Road, by a depth of 120 ft., and that-owing to it being unfenced and neglected it promised to become little more than a rubbish tip. Mr. Edwards asked that the council should fence and grade tho section similar to the adjoining ones, in which case they would undertake to keep it clear of gorse, plant it in front, and give it a nice appearance. At present it was an eyesore to the district. The same sneaker also referred to the fencing off of the approach to the top of the hill (above Waipapa Road), where the service reservoir was situated. That point afforded one of the most beautiful views in Wellington, and could not now be reached, except by going round the back roads. If the right-of-way were opened they might bo able to induce Mr. W. M. Muir (of the Hataitai Land Co.) to give the City a strfo to improve the approach. Mr.' M'Goldrick also spoke. The chairman (Mr. G. Frost) said that the representations of the deputation ..would receive every consideration. He expressed surprise, however, to hear from the deputation that the section was being neglected, seeing that it had been leased to the Hataitai Bowling Club at a nominal rental on the condition that they would fence in the section on the Waipapa Boad frontage and keep it clean and presentable. The whole matter, would now be looked into. ; - '
