Auckland, 1 March' 20. - Two recent arrivals from England applied to Mr. Frazer, S.M., for exemption from military service on the ground that it was contrary to their religious convictions, as they believed the bearing of arms contrary ti Christ's teachings. ' The Magistrate said that as the law stood he must grant these exemptions, though it was hard to understand how anyone who studied th 6 causes and effects of the present war could hold such'opinions. A sergeant-major who was representing the Defence Department remarked that he could not help telling the two applicants that if he had his way they would both have been in the firing-line, with a gun apiece. AUCKLAND'S EXCELLENT RECORD By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, March 29. ' Since the city recruiting campaign opened on March 4, a total of fourteen hundred men have enlisted at the central station. Of these 657 were accepted, 451 deferred, and 293 rejected.
